Afoko Has Himself To Blame

The national Executive Council (NEC)of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has finally suspended its national chairman Paul Afoko.

Mr. Afoko has been a subject for discussion in the NPP over months where his style of leadership has been questioned not only by party supporters but by some gurus in the NPP.

Many supporters of the NPP believe Mr. Paul Afoko has an ‘agenda’ against the party’s Flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Paul Afoko has also been accused of masterminding the death of the NPP’s Upper East chairman, Adams Mahama – which his brother Gregory Afoko was arrested.

As a result, the party’s NEC upon the internal wrangling in the party last Friday, October 23, 2015 suspended Mr. Paul Afoko indefinitely.

We think this is long overdue. Since Paul Afoko became chairman of NPP, there has never been peace in the party. Mr. Afoko should know that all cannot be wrong whilst he alone is right. We believe the party is bigger than anybody including Paul Afoko, as he should not be made to stand in the party’s way towards victory in the 2016 elections.

His chairmanship has been very disastrous to the party. NPP has had several chairmen over the years and none has worked against his own party to the extent of his junior brother allegedly murdering a regional chairman making it impossible for him to even enter his own region. This has never happened under any NPP chairman’s era.

We think Mr. Afoko has himself to blame. We believe he has not live up to expectation as a national chairman of the biggest opposition party in the country. Mr. Akofo has not played any meaningful role to enhance the fortunes of the party as the party prepares to go to battle with the ruling NDC for the 2016 elections.

We think that discipline must reign supreme in the party so that the party can focus on the prosecution of the campaign for victory in the next elections and this should serve as a lesson for everybody.

We don’t think the NPP should sit down of this ineffective chairman, who cannot even go to his home region to campaign, to run the party because it risks being tag an Akan party. We should wake up from this tribal politics and deal with the issues.

Those who claim to be NPP members yet failing to see the harm Afoko and co are doing the party needs to rethink. In any serious democracy, Afoko would have resigned immediately after the shameful attack and death of Adams Mahama as a matter of principle.

In our view, this is the best decision the party has taken. All that the party needs is peace and if the actions and inactions of some people do not promote peace and also geared toward winning the 2016 elections, they have to be shown the red card.
