Minister of Power Dr Kwabena Donkor has described the three-year long energy crisis in Ghana as temporary, saying the country is on the verge of its end.
“We have gone through a temporary period of power challenges but as we speak we are almost at the end of it.”
Dr Donkor, who is also Member of Parliament for Pru East Constituency, made these remarks on Tuesday, October 27 when he addressed Ghanaian and Turkish officials at a ceremony to set sail a 225-megawatt power barge.
The barge is one of two constructed for the country by Turkish power-ship maker Karadeniz to ease the power crisis of the West African nation.
“Ghana is eagerly awaiting the arrival of these vessels in our waters,” Dr Donkor told the gathering.
He said Ghana is on the verge of ending the crisis – which has come to be known among the populace as dumsor – as another generating set has arrived to augment the power-generating capacity.
“And whilst we have this power barge and two other projects ongoing, we can simply say we are generating enough power to meet our power needs.”
Government has indicated its resolve to end the power crisis by the end of the year and increase the country’s generating capacity to 5,000 MW by 2016.
