The Days Of Dumsor Are Numbered � Power Minister

Dr. Kwabena Donkor, Minister of Power, has reiterated that earnest preparations are underway to announce the end of the infamous power shedding popularly referred as Dumsor at the close of the year.

“All things being equal and with the help of Almighty God we are on schedule, however in this mechanical things you can never be hundred percent certain, just as there’s no certainty in life.’

“But in terms of our planning and in terms of our equipment availability we should be in position to pronounce load shedding over by the end of the year as planned.”

Dr. Donkor was speaking to the press Friday after cutting the sod for the commencement of works of a 396 MVA bulk supply substation located at Dawa in the Greater Accra Region.

The Dawa Bulk Supply Substation being executed by Enclave Power Company is meant to serve a 3,000-acre industrial park scheduled to open in 2016. When completed, the substation would be the largest substation in Ghana.

Dr. Donkor reiterated that the first equal, in about three weeks the barge will be in Ghana waters and within that period the civil and transmission works being undertaken her will be completed,” he said.

He said the power barge which is the first of two will take one week to fix into the national grid, when it finally berths.

Dr. Donkor said the second barge is expected into the country by the middle of next year to bring the total contracted capacity to 450MW.

He stressed that some of the ongoing works to end dumsor, apart from the power barge includes the Kpone Plant, which is mechanically completed and will bring an additional 220 MW, and the Sunnon Asogli360MW phase one and two expansion, adding the phase one will be completed by end of year bringing 180MW and the TICO expansion steam component is ready adding 110 MW to the generation capacity.

Again, he said the Ameri works, is close to completion and before the end of the year will also be on steam.

Speaking earlier on during the ceremony, Dr. Donkor pointed out that local Content law is being given meaning, adding that Enclave power is a testimony.

Mr. Ernest Owusu-Afari, Executive Director of Enclave power Company, on his part, said the Dawa power sub-station is estimated at the cost of $80 million and will be completed in the next eighteen months all things being equal.

He explained that the company has a track record of efficiency, pointing out that Enclaved Power Company was established in 2009 under the companies act as an indigenous local company.
