Tension is brewing in the Ketu South Constituency of the Volta Region over who should represent the people on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in parliament in 2016.
There has been a massive demonstration by women in the area against the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Fifi Kwetey, who is among the candidates who have filed for the party’s primaries.
This is the second demonstration against him in a week.
The women, who comprised market women, supporters and members of the NDC among others, claimed the outcome of the vetting conducted by the party’s leadership in Ho, the regional capital, recently was unfair and unacceptable.
The women, who identified themselves as Concerned NDC Women of Klikor, Somey and Aflao – the three traditional areas that make up the constituency – were clad in red with red hand bands and head gears to match as they marched through the principal streets of the towns.
They wielded placards which had several inscriptions and chanted several songs amidst drumming and dancing.
Some of the inscriptions on their placards were, “No vindictiveness in Ketu South,” “Stop this loot and share in Ketu South,” “Don’t impose Golden Fii (Fifi Kwetey) through this sham primaries,” “No elimination by rough tactics” and “We need leaders with integrity…”
A spokesperson for the women, Sefakor Mensah, noted that the women were also not happy with attempts by some party bigwigs in the constituency, national and regional levels to impose Fifi Fiave Kwetey the constituents.
She alleged that instead of clandestinely imposing Fifi, the party should rather ensure that there is a clear verdict on the vetting of the aspirants so that more qualified and hardworking aspirants will contest and unseat the incumbent MP.
She said Fifi Kwetey had lost touch with the constituents and had become very arrogant, as he had refused to engage the constituents on the happenings within government. More so, none of the promises made by the MP had been fulfilled.
Although the NDC is contemplating whether or not to hold its primaries on 7 November, about 86 aspirants in the region have been cleared for the primaries after a vetting exercise over a month ago.
After the vetting, one out of five aspirants from Ketu South, Albert Zigah, was disqualified.
The other aspirants are Famous Kuadugah, Fifi Kwetey, Sylvanus Yao Amedorme and Jim Yao Morti.
Although there is no known official position of the National Executives of the NDC, there are conflicting reports that Jim Yao Morti, a close contender for the seat, had been disqualified.
This is heightening tension in the Ketu South constituency, especially among the masses who believe that Jim can unseat the incumbent MP, who the people claim, is currently in the bad books of many of them.
