The National Youth Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), SammI Awuku, has insisted that he did not use his Facebook post to incite violence in the country.
Sammi Awuku in his post over the weekend, charged the youth to cause a revolution, because according to him, the Electoral Commission was planning to audit the voters’ register instead of creating a new one.
“By her posture and utterances, the EC boss is setting the stage to deny the youth and the people of Ghana a new and credible voters register for the 2016 elections. We will not sit down for our future to be toyed with. The cost of a new credible voters’ register is cheaper than the cost of violence. Guess it’s time for the Youth to Arise! We cannot afford to fail the masses in 2016. Youth Revolution imminent,” he added.
Mr. Awuku has since the post received massive backlash mainly from youth groups affiliated to the incumbent National Democratic Congress for inciting violence.
But speaking to Citi News, Sammi Awuku said the statement has been misinterpreted by his detractors.
He argued that “it’s only pathetic minds who have reduced his post” to mean that he called for “arms revolution.”
“We cannot continue to do the same thing we do and expect change in 2016. My call of the youth of the country was to get involved in mass mobilization of our fellow youth, organizing for Ghana, mobilizing for change for us in order to get rid off this corrupt and incompetent government in 2016.”
Citing the revolution in Ivory Coast, Sammi Awuku said “five years ago, the youth of that country decided to dump Gbagbo after a tenure of incompetence.”
“They decided that regardless of the money that were thrown at them their future was at stake. They mobilized for Ouattara, they organized for change in Ivory and Ouattara five years down the line has transformed Ivory Coast to be the fastest growing economy in West Africa,” he stated.
