Mr Robert Dwamena, Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Wednesday said the company would enforce measures aimed at eliminating accidents at work places and homes.
Mr Dwamena was speaking at the National launch of the third ECG Safety, Health and Environmental Week Awareness Celebration, on the theme: ’’Enhancing safety, Health and Environmental Consciousness in the Workplace’’, at Koforidua.
He said ECG recorded 25 electrical accidents involving its staff this year, out of which two fatalities occurred in the Volta and Western Regions, with three assault cases and five vehicular accidents.
He said management would not compromise in enforcing the company‘s safety policy standard Operations Procedures, Transport Policy and other codes of practice.
Mr Dwamena urged the Safety, Health and Environment Division to develop and implement programmes to enhance the general health of staff, and charged them to intensify staff and public education on safety awareness to enhance emergency preparedness.
He said 280 staff across the 10 regions had undergone training on Workplace Fire Safety and First Aid, as part of efforts to educate staff and enhance safety measures.
Dr Frederick Danso, Medical Officer, Holy Family Hospital, urged the public to avoid unsafe equipments, environments and work practices, which could put them at risk.
He cautioned the public to desist from putting generators in enclosed areas to avoid deaths and other related dangers.
Mr Michael Baah, Eastern Regional General Manager of ECG, said analysis has shown that, most accidents could be avoided if risk assessment is properly done.
He explained that, organizations have a moral responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of their members and called for the promotion of safety practices.
