More than 25,726 children aged under five years in the Assin-South District have been immunized against poliomyelitis, one of the nine childhood killer diseases that can also cause paralysis in young children.

Out of the number infants between the ages of 6-59 months, were in addition given doses of vitamin A to boost their immune system and protect their eye-sight.

Mr Flex Aipare, Principal Technical Officer (PTO) of the Disease Control Unit, of the District Health Directorate, in a media briefing said the exercise which took place on October 22and 23 this year, formed part of the Extended Programme on Immunization (EPI).

The goal of the national campaign was to mob up and the children who missed the last and 50th EPI which took place in 1996.

Mr Aipare indicated the exercise was a huge success in the District as the target of 21,662 was exceeded by 10 per cent.

A total of 172 volunteers, 14 supervisors moved from house-to-house to give the free polio vaccine to the children.

Mr Aipare, thanked the District Assembly, World Health Organisation (WHO), Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Community Information Centers (CICs), their partners and the volunteers for rededicating themselves to serving the nation at all times.

He advised parents to always seek medical attention instead of resorting to quack doctors and unapproved drugs which ends up complicating the treatment of the disease.

He also appealed to the government to construct more roads and provide them with the relevant logistics to make healthcare accessible to all, especially those in the villages and hamlets.
