ECs Activities Are Full Of Darkness; No Transparency In Its Operations - Ken Kuranchie

Managing Editor of the Daily Searchlight, Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie has akin the operations of the Electoral Commission to darkness.

According to him, there is darkness in the activities of the Electoral Commission as Ghanaians whose money is used to fund the operations of the commission are kept in the dark before, during and after elections.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show in the capacity as the leader of Coalition for Free, Fair and Transparent Election, Ken Kuranchie said his pressure group wants the activities of the EC to be so clear that they can know exactly the commission does on the daily basis.

“We want to know what they are doing now and where they intend to move to next. It is as if that when you look at the EC’s operations from afar, the whole place is full of darkness and everything that comes from them is questionable; that is the reason for this group to get a transparent EC in this country,” he stated.

He enlightened that the 2008 and 2012 elections were not transparent; stressing the 2012 in particular was problematic before, during and after the elections as the EC didn’t know the number of ballot papers it printed and how they were distributed in the country.

He mentioned that for the first time in 2012, the Electoral Commission used two different voters’ registers for the elections unknown to all the political parties until the commission was dragged before the Supreme Court.

He reiterated that there must be public pressure of the Electoral Commission to know how it disburses the budget set out for the elections coupled with the criteria it uses to employ personalities to supervise elections in the country.

He maintained it is against this backdrop that his pressure group is pushing the commission to be more transparent and responsible and accountable to Ghanaians; insisting “we shall use all lawful and constitutional process to engage the Electoral Commission”.
