Security expert, Dr Kwesi Aning, has charged leaders of political parties in Ghana to deal with increasing spate of intraparty violence.
Dr. Kwesi Aning’s comments comes after a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was killed at the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti region.
Dr. Aning who is with the Department of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre says comments by some political leaders give their followers the impression that improper behaviour is permitted.
“The utterances of some political leaders across the spectrum is very disturbing,” he said
The expert warned that if this is not checked it will affect Ghana’s democracy.
“[The act] must not be condoned and we must separate the criminal action and elements from the political acts,” Dr Aning told Joy News.
Abubakar Saddiq was part of the angry Akufo-Addo loyalists who locked up the Asawase Constituency office, Thursday in protest over comments made by the Chairman of the Constituency, Isaac Brenya.
Brenya had called on the 2016 NPP flagbearer Nana Addo to step down. Isaac Brenya who was in Accra was part of a demonstration against the party's decision to suspend its National Chairman Paul Afoko.
The deceased and several other supporters had threatened to beat up Mr Brenya for supporting suspended National Chair Paul Afoko and for making comments they thought was derogatory for Nana Addo.
Saddiq was said to have gone to the constituency office on hearing the office had been ransacked Friday morning but was attacked and murdered by unknown assailants.
The unfortunate incident has been condemned by the the New Patriotic Party and Veteran Journalist Abdul Malik Kweku Baako.
Chief Imam of the Asawase Muslim Community. Sheik Yussif Alhassan says the new wave of violence could threaten the peace in the area.
“I think this issue is not an issue of blood shedding. I condemn it,” he told Luv FM’s Prince Appiah tells, the tension there must be dealt with to avert further violence.
Meanwhile, Police in the Ashanti Region say they are closing in on the perpetrators of the killing.
