Fraudsters Infiltrate Car Selling Business

The Vehicle and Asset Dealers Association of Ghana (VADAG) has advised members of the general public who want to buy or sell vehicles to contact only certified garage owners who are members of VADAG.

This is because there are a lot of fraudsters who have infiltrated the car selling industry with the sole aim of defrauding innocent customers.

The situation is increasing and making it difficult to properly differentiate between genuine car dealers and fraudsters.

The association raised this concern at a press conference yesterday on the usage of DV and DP plates in Accra and the recent swoop by the police on cars with DV and DP number plates.

According to VADAG, a great number of people who were arrested by the police in a swoop are people who do not own garages but sell such cars on the street using the DV and DP plates.

Nana Yaw Owusu Duodu, the General Secretary of VADAG, stated that out of the 800 people whose cars were impounded were 10 of its members, who were later found not guilty.

He said the recent exercise affected most of its members who were genuinely and lawfully transacting their business under the regulation.

The situation, he said, possess serious threat to the effective management of security by the security agencies in Ghana.

He said the law on the usage of DP and DP plates does not authorise motor vehicles to be used for carrying passengers, goods or for hiring.

Nana Yaw stated that VADAG recognises that no person under the section 23 clause 9, 10, 11 of L.I. shall use a trade plate for a purpose which is not stipulated in the Road Traffic Regulation 2012.

With regard to the recent swoop, he appealed to the Ghana Police Service to be circumspect in carrying out their duties to enforce road traffic regulations in Ghana.

He stated that such action would be detrimental to the genuine VADAG members who are lawfully using the DV and DP plates for their business transactions.
