NPPs Problem Is Simple; Elders Refusing To Relinquish Control Of The Party... - Dr. Amoako Baah

A political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has identified the happenings in the biggest opposition New Patriotic Party to be a natural phenomenon which happens in every political party globally.

According to the senior political science lecturer, the ruling National Democratic Congress has had its share of the phenomenon as the party’s General Secretary and his cohorts have managed to bench the founder, former President Rawlings away from the party.

He added that it is that same shift that saw the former first lady Mrs. Konadu Agyeman Rawlings forming her party from the ruling NDC but this didn’t affect the strength of the ruling party.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Dr. Amoako Baah insisted the shift in the NPP has begun but then the leaders of the party have lost the best way to handle it as they feel they are losing control of the party to the young people.

He reminded the opposition NPP that the change is necessary because the young people are more than the older ones; advising that the best approach to the phenomenon is for the older ones to adopt the change in the current trend of politics and work with the young ones.

He explained that the change started when many older ones in Parliament loset their seats to the young ones in Ashanti Region when the NPP primaries were conducted; stressing the change is ongoing which the leaders have no choice but to embrace it.

“That is where they don’t want to relinquish control for the young ones and that is the problem of the NPP; but you have no choice. When a political party changes, you change with it or you will be swept away” he advised.

He however was not surprised that a new political party called New Labour Party (NLP) has been formed out of the NPP because to him it was in that same vein Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings formed her party National Democratic Party (NDP) out of the ruling NDC; quizzing “has NDC collapsed?

He therefore assured that those NPP members who are upset and have formed their party are not many to affect the strength of the party.

Dr. Amoako Baah was of the view that it is because of the new phenomenon in NDC which has instilled discipline in the party; adding that the NDC has disqualified its Parliamentary aspirant in the North but has not generated brouhaha.
