The Aburihene Otoobour Djan Kwasi has disclosed that the chiefs of Akuapem in the Eastern region have resolved to place a ban on the holding of funerals and any event that is likely to create any form of noise over a 40-day period.
Otoobour Djan Kwasi, who is also the Adontenhene of Akuapem and currently the Acting President of the Akuapem Traditional Council, made the disclosure at a ceremony held at Nsakye, near Aburi to usher in this year’s Odwira Festival.
The Adontenhene led sub-chiefs and elders of Aburiman Traditional Council to Nsakye, their ancestral home to perform traditional rites which would enable them successfully celebrate the annual Odwira Festival, which began on Monday, November 9, 2015.
Various activities have been lined up for the seven-day festival, which according to him, would be held without usual pageantry associated with Akuapem Odwira.
The Acting President mentioned that the ban would take effect from December 20, 2015 and last for 40 days after which mourners would be allowed to hold their funerals.
He was hopeful the funeral of former Paramount Chief, Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa would be held from January 26 to February 2, 2016.
Otoobour Gyan Kwasi further explained that though the ban was imposed in recognition of the former paramount chief, it was also to help the various working funeral committees that have been set up by the Council to put structures in place to ensure a befitting burial.
He added that many guests from home and abroad, including members of the various Houses of Chiefs, are expected to take part in the event.
The Acting President also used the occasion to call on the youth to be circumspect in whatever they do during the funeral in order not to violate the law.
