Ghanaians have been advised to discard the erroneous perception that Polytechnics and other forms of tertiary institutions is meant for dull students, while the traditional university system is meant for smart students.
According to the rector of the Ho Polytechnic, Prof. Emmanuel Kojo Sakyi such a perception was very myopic and delusional and clarified that “polytechnic education is not for mediocre people.”
The Rector who could not fathom why people could actually believe such misrepresentation noted that it was wrong for people to make Polytechnics and other forms of tertiary education a second choice after failing to make it into the traditional universities.
He therefore stressed that dull and ‘substandard students” could not equally make it through polytechnic education. He reiterated, “if you are a mediocre person, you cannot make your way through the system. Those who go through the system cannot end up joining the unemployed graduates association, because of the kind of training they receive here.”
Prof. Sakyi made the clarification during the 23rd matriculation ceremony of the Ho Polytechnic in Ho the Volta Regional Capital.
He entreated the 1,279 fresh students to make good use of the opportunity to acquire the appropriate knowledge and skills training relevant to the job market since, polytechnics are the only tertiary institutions that train persons to become job providers and not job seekers.
He argued that all round the world; technical education has been identified as the key to industrialization and is therefore the foundation of many developed countries.
He urged young people desirous of acquiring tertiary education to also consider the polytechnic education as an equal choice.
The rector explained that the challenges associated with the academic progression of polytechnic graduates will be eliminated when the conversion of polytechnics into technical universities was completed, as the polytechnics will be in a position to award their own degrees.
