The construction of a 500-bed Teaching Hospital for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is now progressing steadily.
The first phase of the hospital is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
The facility is being jointly financed by the Ghana Education Trust Fund, (GETFund) and KNUST from its internally generated funds.
The initial estimated cost of the project which is GH¢6million is likely to be increased following project variations and delay in the completion period.
The Director of Works at the KNUST, Kwadwo Kyereme said that completion of the hospital will help to increase the students intake at the University aside from helping to enhancing teaching and learning in the medicine and allied health programmes at the University.
Currently, KNUST is using the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital as the teaching facility for medical students from the University.
The first phase of the KNUST Teaching Hospital will provide facilities for Dentistry in addition to consulting rooms, observation area, out patients department, obstetrics and gynecology department and the main administration block.
The Teaching Hospital is connected with similar healthcare training projects. These are Veterinary Medical School and a five-storey classroom block for the Allied Health Department.
Other projects being constructed by the KNUST include four storey classrooms block each for the Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Natural Resources and the Sciences.
This came to light when Asantehene and the chancellor of the university paid a working visit to the university.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu also familiarized himself with completed projects such as the Institute of Distant Learning which is fitted with a modern conference centre and a tele-conferencing facility.
He also inspected the completed central biology laboratory and a recording studio.
