More than 1,000 residents in the Okere Constituency on Monday received free health care from a medical group comprising Ghanaians and Americans based in the U.S at selected health centres in the Akuapem North District.
The 14 member-team made up of pharmacists, nurses and surgeons were stationed at the Adukrom Clinic for general consultations and eye care treatment while others performed surgery at the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital at Mampong Akuapem.
Mr Paul Larbi, the Chairman of the Adukrom Development Board, told the GNA at the closing of the one-week service that 30 patients with goitre and hernia were operated on while over 500 persons received medicated glasses for both sight and reading.
He said the team was contacted by the board to offer help in the socio-economic development of the area and they agreed to support in the area of health since it was the bedrock for every development.
The Akuapem North District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr George Opare Addo, assured the people that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) would continue to function to ensure their access to quality health care.
He said the government recognized that health care was the basis for the socio-economic development of the country and was, therefore, committed to reviewing the operations of the NHIS to become more effective, devoid of the current problems for maximum benefit.
The DCE, therefore, told them not to be sceptical about the scheme but renew their cards when they expire.
Mr Opare Addo thanked the team for reaching out to the people and expressed the hope that they would extend their services to other parts in the constituency.
