Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng Elected Chairman of NMC

The National Media Commission has unanimously elected Mr. Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng as Chairman of the 8th Commission at its first meeting held today, November 30, 2015.

He replaces Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere, who has served his term at the Commission.

Mr. Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng is a Consultant in Communication, Media and Culture. He is currently President of the Ghana Association of Writers. He comes to the Commission with extensive experience having practised for nearly forty years as a reporter, editor, writer, teacher and trainer.


A statement by the Commission signed by Mr. George Sarpong, Executive Secretary said Mr. Gyan-Apenteng started writing for newspapers and also contributing to radio and TV programmes during his student days at University of Ghana, Legon. He also hosted Builders of Tomorrow and later Talking Point on GTV.

He began work formally as a journalist at Daily Graphic in 1982 as Staff Writer. He subsequently became Foreign News Editor and later had a stint as acting Editor.

He was subsequently appointed editor of the Mirror where he introduced new features which have endured till today.

Mr. Gyan-Apenteng relocated to the United Kingdom where he co-founded Ghana News magazine before being invited to be the Deputy and Acting Editor of West Africa magazine. He also founded and edited African Topics magazine, the only Pan-African publication dedicated to governance and human rights.

He also worked with the Third World Network, Cultural Initiatives Support Programme, the European Union Culture Fund for Ghana, among others as a communications expert.

He also served as a part time lecturer at Vauxhall College in London and the European University Centre for Peace Studies in Austria.

He currently provides training for both state and private sector institutions and is a columnist for The Mirror Newspaper.
