Prez Mahama Should Be TruthfulKey Problem Is Cedi Depreciation - Nana Akomea

The call by President Mahama on Ghanaians to be ready to pay realistic price for constant supply of electricity with the arrival of the Karpower barge has angered the Communications Director of the opposition NPP, Nana Akomea to say the President is not being truthful to Ghanaians.

According to him, the key cause of the constant change of price in the electricity tariff is the unstable dollar exchange rate which cripples the cedi, forcing the government to increase electricity tariff to burden Ghanaians.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, Nana Akomea stated the inability of the NDC government to sustain the Cedi is responsible for the intention of government to increase electricity tariff by 102 percent.

He explained that the government generates electricity in dollars and sells to Ghanaians in Cedi and so any time the dollar gains strength over the Cedi, the government is left with no option than push its incompetent economic management of the Cedi unto Ghanaians without confessing it is its failure which has caused the increment.

He emphatically stated President Mahama’s government is mean to Ghanaians as he only increased workers salaries by 10% last year and then increased electricity tariff by 80%; asking them to pay realistically for electricity power as if Ghanaians don’t pay realistic price for power supply.

“President Mahama’s Government should tell Ghanaians the truth that he cannot sustain the Cedi and that we use dollar to generate electricity and sell it in Cedi and so when the dollar exchange rate goes high, we have to increase the tariff to meet the demand,” he recounted.

Nana Akomea added “the truth of the matter is that we pay realistic price for electricity but if the dollar is unstable, it makes what we pay unrealistic and then we have to pay extra because the government cannot sustain our Cedi”.

In frustration, Nana Akomea charged on the Mahama-led administration to end the over 3 years suffering from the unstable power supply with whatever means necessary as Ghanaians cannot contain the ordeal any longer.

“They should try to end the Dumsor because we are tired…so whether barge or whatever they bring to end Dumsor, they have promised to end it by the close of this year; we are expecting to see the end of Dumsor in December 31, 2015,” he charged.
