The ex-Black Stars coach claims he was on his way to building a formidable Ghana outfit until he left his role.

Former Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah says he was on course to building a fearsome Black Stars team until an ‘unceremonious’ termination of his contract disrupted his plans.

The Al Khartoum manager qualified the Black Stars for the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil after taking over the team in 2012, but saw a disappointing campaign at the global showpiece end his reign in September 2014.

“My ambition was to build a team that the nation will depend on for the next 10 to 15 years,” Appiah told Starr FM.

“If you recollect, I had been criticized for not having a regular team because my team had new faces.

“It was good to invite new faces to build competition in the team so not to solely depend on some players.

“In depending on some particular players, they may later bluff the country by deciding not to play again and you see the whole country crying.

“So many new players formed the core of the team. It wasn’t about Kwesi Appiah but rather Ghana as a whole.”

 
Ghana saw a first ever elimination at the group stage of the World Cup under Appiah after falling to the USA and Portugal in Group G. In between, there was a 2-2 draw with eventual champions Germany.
