What's The Logic Behind And Basis For Utility Tariff Increment? Sam Pyne Queries

Ashanti Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sam Payne has questioned the logic and basis for the new tariff increment announced by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC).

Sam Payne wondered why the PURC will announce tariff increment while Ghanaians are still being saddled with numerous economic challenges.

He asserted that the 67.2% and 59.2% on water and electricity respectively is a huge adjustment because, per his analysis, electricity consumers who used to buy about 50 cedis worth of units on prepaid meters will have to pay over 90 cedis due to the changes.

The PURC, on Monday, announced the new tariff increment. The new adjustments will however take effect from December 14, 2015.

Speaking on Kokrokoo on Peace FM, the NPP Regional Secretary mentioned among several factors the energy and water problems facing Ghanaians, adding that the increases will further compound the plight of Ghanaians.

He hoped the new tariff increment does not come to light.
