Koforidua Zongo Youth Clash With Military Over Erection Of Mast

The Koforidua Zongo Tuesday morning witnessed a clash between some irate youth and some military personnel over the mounting of a communication mast.

The mounting of the mast, which is a project being undertaken by National Security nationwide has for sometime led to disagreement between the youth and workers at the site.

The youth said the land for the project has been earmarked for the construction of a school in the Zongo community
A member of the youth group, Hidir Mohammed told Graphic Online that the siting of the mast was done without any consultation with the leadership of the Zongo Community and more so the mast would have health implications on the people.

It would be recalled that about a forth-night ago a similar misunderstanding nearly resulted in a near blood bath but for the intervention of some opinion leaders.

According to Mohammed, in June this year the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South promised to construct a kindergarten on the said land.

However the immediate past Municipal Chief Executive, Dr. Kwaku Owusu Acheampong who was relieved of his post two weeks ago, said the assembly was to site a project on the said land.

"We made efforts to explain our position to the assembly only to realise this morning that a team of military personnel and fully armed policemen have invaded the area to provide security for the mounting of the mast", he added.

He said the youth were law abiding and have decided to resort to the courts to place an injunction on the project.

When Graphic Online visited the site, work on the mast was progressing under the eagle watch of the police while relative calm seemed to have prevailed.
