Hike In Utility Tariffs Wicked - Sachet Water Sellers

Sachet Water sellers have described the new utility tariffs which were announced by the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) to take effect from December 14, 2015 as wicked.

According to the sellers, the government does not feel for them especially when the economy is not stable. They also said the power outage in the country is collapsing their businesses.

Speaking to the Daily Heritage, the sachet water sellers explained that they never dreamt that the increment would go so high because they were expecting a smaller percentage due to the poor performance of the government.

They said government officials do not feel for those who will be affected but only think of themselves and what they feel is best for them not the needy in the country.

Adzo Ablah, a sachet seller explained that they will increase their prices after the set date because where they buy the sachet water to sell; the owners have added extra 0.50pesewas to the price of the water for using generators to freeze the water.

According to Adzo, they are the ones that will be affected mostly because the sachet water companies depend on water for their businesses and electricity for the equipment to work so the increment will only lead the companies to increase the prices to be able to run their businesses.

She said "we have decided to also increase the sachet water after December 14 because failure to do so will collapse our businesses which some of us are avoiding."

According to the distributors contacted, they are not happy about the decision taken by PURC the reason being that the timing is not good for them and other companies especially when they are drawing down the curtains to end the year.

Fiifi Sam told the paper that "PURC should have waited for the year to end before thinking of increasing the utility tariffs because most businesses in the country have ended their account for the year and not ready to incur any cost so the increment will do more harm than good to us."

PURC on Monday announced that electricity tariff has been increased by 59.2 percent while that for the water has been adjusted by 67.2 percent.

According to the Director of Public Relations and External Affairs of PURC, Nana Yaa Jantuah the factors that influenced the increment are, consumer interest, investor interest, economic development of the country, generation mix, fuel mix, availability of the service, growth in demand, power purchase cost (IPP), cedi-to-dollar exchange rate and revenue requirements.
