State-Owned Institutions Cause Debt To Utility Agencies

The Chairman for Tema District Council of labour, Wilson Agana have made allegations against state-owned institutions for causing the debt on utility bills in the country.

In an interview on NEAT FM’s ‘Ghana Montie’ programme, he argued that, government owned institutions are to blame for debt on utilities because it is a sector which does not generate much revenue for the government when compared to private sectors, but consume much electricity in their various offices which the government is not able to pay.

"..Paying of the utility bills is not our problem at all if authorities involved were generating the power for us to work with, not when we have closed up our companies and organization as a result of the power crises," he indicated.

“It is so serious that most residents in Tema do not go to work because they do not get electricity to work with and upon this calamity the PURC still want to increase tariffs.”

He accused the PRO for the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), Nana Yaa Jantuah for always making the same statements when they call press conferences, which are promises from them to improve the service and also blaming dollar rates as the main cause of the tariffs increment.

Mr. Agana said they are also planning to meet the PURC on Monday and waiting for the Trade Union Congress’s(TUC’s) statement on this increase which they would also take their actions based on what TUC carries to Ghanaians.
