The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has held a rally at Asankragua in the Amenfi West District in the Western Region to galvanise support to win the by-election scheduled for Tuesday.
Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, on Thursday joined some national and constituency executive of the NDC to formally introduce the party’s candidate, Mr Eric Afful.
Speaker after speaker urged the people of the constituency to pay tribute to the late Member of Parliament, Mr John Gyetuah, by voting massively for Mr Afful.
The by-election became necessary following the death of Mr Gyetuah in October this year.
First to address the rally was a former Amenfi West Constituency organiser of the NDC, Mr Kissi Sam, who called on the people to retain the seat for the NDC.
Taking his turn, the Western Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, called on the people in the constituency to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner before, during and after the polls.
He gave an assurance that the Regional Security Council would also do its bit to ensure that the impending election was held in a peaceful atmosphere.
On the elections, Mr Aidoo asked the NDC supporters to eschew complacency and rather work hard at the polling stations where elections were won.
Introducing the candidate at the rally, Mr Amissah-Arthur underscored the need for the people to come out in their numbers and vote for Mr Afful, saying that the only way the people could show appreciation for the good work initiated by the late MP was for them to elect the NDC candidate.
He said the NDC government would continue to bring development to the district and expressed the hope that the victory of Mr Afful next Tuesday would send a strong signal that the constituency was solidly behind the party.
Mr Afful, for his part, urged the people to turn up in their numbers and vote and pledged to continue the work initiated by Mr Gyetuah should he emerge victorious.
Other speakers who addressed the rally were the immediate past National Organiser of the NDC, Mr Yaw Boateng-Gyan, the National Communication Officer, Mr Solomon Nkansah, and a Deputy Communications Officer, Mr Peter Otukunor.
The other political parties contesting the elections are the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the United Front Party (UFP) and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
The Vice-President had earlier called on the Chief of Asankan Bremen, Nana Kwabena Aminamah II, and the Chief of Asankragua, Nana Obiri Boahen, to commiserate with them on the death of the MP.
