I Cant Say AMERI Contract Was A Good Deal Or Not, But - Member Parliament's Energy C'tt'ee

NPP’s Kobina Tahir Hammond says he cannot conclude that the now controversial Africa, Middle East Resource Investment [AMERI] contract was a bad deal until he has apprised himself of all relevant documents on the contract.

But the controversy surrounding the contract has compelled the Adansi-Asokwa Member of Parliament (MP) to call on government to consider terminating it before any calamity ensues.

I can’t say if it was a good deal or not…I will tell you when I get my notes…but the contract should be cancelled if it is putting government in a bad light…I think it would be good for Ghana if we terminate it,” he said on Asempa FM’s afternoon political talk show.

A publication by a Norwegian newspaper, VG, which has enjoyed widespread circulation in Ghanaian media, among other things indicates that one Umar Farooq Zahoor, a top official at AMERI is a wanted fraudster.

Farooq Zahoor, according to VG, is on the wanted list of Norwegian police and Interpol for his lead roles in various scams in Norway and other countries.

The publication also alleged that the $510 million power deal could have been clinched at a far lower cost -- quoting about $220 million as the going price for the 10 power generators on wheels.

This contract, K.T Hammond who is a ranking member on Parliament’s Energy Committee said, should be terminated if it is putting the government of Ghana in a bad light.

The AMERI plant which is sited at Takoradi in the Western Region is part of government’s panacea for solving the protracted energy crisis.
