Volta NPP Call For Immediate Opening Of Adomi Bridge

The Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, John Peter Amewu, is calling for immediate opening of the Adomi Bridge to reduce the suffering of Ghanaians, especially the good people of Volta.

According to the Volta Regional NPP Chairman, the bridge, which has been closed for about two years now has brought untold hardship to the people of Volta.

He averred that though the closure was necessary to pave way for the renovation, "it has been unduly prolonged just to exploit the already suffering masses".

When probed further as to how the masses were being exploited as a result of the closure, the Chairman explained that vehicle owners, drivers and passengers have been made worse of since the closure of the bridge.

"We have to pay between GH¢6.00 - GH¢40.00 to cross the Volta Lake using the ferry. Drivers of commercial vehicles have been forced to transfer part of the cost to passengers, thus, making our economic situation worst of," he posited.

He further revealed that "it is intriguing that the renovation has to take about two years, just like the duration for the construction of the bridge, which was done between 1961 and 1963. Is it not ridiculous?

Mr. Amewu noted that the people of the Volta Region are tired and cannot afford the burden and hassles that accompany the long queues at the pontoon site.

“We have been reliably informed that the Belfinger Engineers have finished the renovation works some five months ago but were told to linger on so that some more revenues would be generated at Senchi Ferry through exorbitant tolls. Do you do that at the expense of the ordinary Ghanaian?" the NPP Chairman passionately asked.

In related development, Mr J.P Awemu has chastised the NDC government for the wanton corruption leading to the economic decay in the country, and the eventual neglect of the people of Volta Region.

“We wake up every day only to be traumatized by questionable contracts and unprecedented acts of corruption. Just over the weekend, the Power Minister was alleged to have signed a $520m energy contract with Ameri group instead of $290m on behalf of the poor tax payer.

“Notable personalities in the NDC from the Volta Region have all been neglected, sacked and replaced by Mahama family and friends. What then is the offence of the people of Volta?” he asked rhetorically.

The Eastern corridor road, according to him, have come to a halt. The contractors, Mr. Amewu indicated, have deserted the project close to one year.

He charged the media “to take your cameras to the road and come back to tell the world the state of affairs."

When asked what the NPP would do if the Adomi Bridge is not open to the public by the said date, the NPP Volta Regional chairman said "well, they say they won't listen to anybody as in their 'yentie obiaa mantra' but I can assure you that if they don’t, we will mass up the whole Volta Region including the NDC core supporters onto street to demonstrate against the unfortunate and discriminatory treatment meted out to the people of Volta by the NDC. They (NDC) in the Volta Region are not happy themselves."
