Deadly Weapons And The Danger They Portend For Us!

News yesterday that the police in Ashanti region have arrested a 72-year-old Ivorian at Akwatialine in Kumasi for possessing a large cache of arms and ammunitions is indeed scarring and worrying. According to the Ashanti regional Police Command, the suspect, who has been identified as Moro Sata, was arrested together with four Ghanaian accomplices.

In fact we on this paper seize this opportunity to applaud the efforts of the police and all those who helped, in one way or the other, to arrest these dangerous persons. Clearly, the suspects are a threat to our society.

Indeed what is equally worrying after the arrest is the kinds of arms and ammunitions that the 72-year-old Ivorian managed to smuggle into the country. These included AK 47 assault rifles, 45 automatic sidearm, a machine gun among others. And the police tell us that some of the automatic guns seized can fire continuously for six hours. So we can all imagine how deadly these weapons are and how deadlier if it got into the hands of persons who meant evil for Ghana!

For us at Today the arrests made and seizure of the cache of arms and ammunitions raises questions about the loose and porous nature of our borders. It is a fact that Ghana’s borders pose security threat and this has been compounded by corrupt security personnel manning the borders.

Only God knows what quantum of ammunitions this Ivorian arms dealer has smuggled into this country. And into which hands these arms and ammunitions are. The question we on this paper ask is: How did Moro Sata bring the arms into Ghana? Definitely he might have had support from people including security officers at some of our borders.

Thus it brings to the fore the calibre of security personnel deployed to man our various borders. The matter even becomes more serious when we look at the fact that Ghana will be going to the polls next year (2016) to elect a president and 275 Members of Parliament (MPs).

It is along this line that we on Today urge the police and other security agencies to be on high alert, especially at the various borders of this country. The point is that we cannot afford to lose our guard since that will be disastrous to us as a people. It is highly imperative that we jealously guard and protect the peace that we are currently enjoying.
