A consultant and breast surgeon, Dr Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, has advised men to properly learn how to handle women’s breast with care in order to prevent breast cancer.
Dr Wiafe-Addai, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Breast Care International (BCI), revealed this during a health outreach screening programme dubbed ‘Open Day Celebration’ organised by the Kwahu-Atibie Government Hospital, in collaboration with the Breast Care International, at Kwahu.
She also advised women to seek early and prompt clinical screening on breast cancer for detection and medication.
Dr Wiafe-Addai disclosed the alarming rate at which women were dying of breast cancer and other breast-related diseases in the country, demanding that all females, particularly the youth, undergo screening irrespective of their health status.
Eastern Regional Director of Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Charity Sarpong, who was the guest of honour said, “The celebration was to allow the hospital health workers to open their doors to all stakeholders including patients, clients, politicians, chiefs, opinion leaders, religious groups and the entire community to access free health services at their doorsteps.”
She noted that “as a service, our challenges have included poor public perception, poor quality of healthcare and poor customer care services. These tend to mask other real challenges such inadequate resources and poor accessibility all of which must be addressed if we are to sustain the moderate gains made in improving maternal and neonatal healthcare, which though impressive still fall short of attaining the MDGs 4 and 5.”
Dr Sarpong commended the Kwahu-Atibie Hospital board for organising the outreach programme by involving all the stakeholders and the community as partners in healthcare delivery.
The Kwahu Government Hospital was established in 1954 by the SDA Missionaries, and handed over to the government 20 years later in 1974.
The hospital is located at Atibie and sited along the main Nkawkaw-Atibie highway.
The hospital is one of the two district hospitals in the Kwahu ridge area (the other being the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw). It serves an estimated population of about 230,000 people from over 200 communities within and outside the district.
