Why Majority In Parliament Always Side With Govt - Albert Kan-Dapaah

Former Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Albert Kan-Dapaah has sought to explain why Members of Parliament (MPs) drawn from the majority side, do not criticize policies of the Executive.

He asserts they do so due to their desire to obtain favours from the president.

According to him, eventhough the majority may have some serious concerns about government policies brought to the floor of parliament, they are afraid to voice out their concerns because it may cause them their positions or developmental projects for their constituencies.

Speaking on TV3’s current affairs programme “Agenda”, Kan-Dapaah stated categorically, "the practice has been for members of parliament from the government side to always follow whatever the president brings."

They do this based on two reasons -one is because as parliamentarians they want to be ministers, so in other to attain that position they would not associate themselves with things that would work against them becoming ministers. Number two, is that they want developmental projects in their various constituencies to be fulfilled; and to achieve this, they would have to build a good rapport with the Minister of Finance and the President since they would need their help to do this.

He added that MPs drawn from the Majority side always have these to tell themselves, “I don’t want to be seen as someone who is always criticizing and being too hard on government because when i do this, i won’t get the projects needed in my constituency and if i don’t get the projects i would be kicked out of office."
