2016 Elections Will Not Go Beyond November 30 EC Boss

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei, has told Parliament that the 2016 general elections will not go beyond November 30, 2016, even if there is a run-off.

Briefing members about preparations made towards the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections on the floor of the House Thursday, Mrs Osei said plans are far advanced to ensure that the November polls are held on the proposed date (November 7).

She told the House that her outfit has started work on the election committees and has so far set up a committee in charge of demarcation of Electoral Areas and the creation of additional polling stations.

This committee, she noted, will begin its work next week. That aside, her office has also set up a committee tasked with the responsibility of recruiting and training of election officials to ensure that “the whole exercise becomes a success”.

This committee is also expected to begin work next week.

She said several amendments to Constitutional Instruments will also take place to ensure that all the reforms, especially, with regards to CI 78, CI 75, C1 72 and PNDC Law 284, are legally taken care of.

Exhibition of the voters register, she noted, will take place in June, 2016, with receipts of nominations scheduled to take place on July 18 and 19, 2016.

The deadline for the transfer of vote and proxies has been fixed for September 8, 2016 while printing and distribution of ballot papers will start on September 10 and end in October, she added.

Accreditation and Application for observers of the 2016 general elections will commence on August and end in September, 2016. Madam Charlotte Osei further told the legislators that her office has also planned a dialogue with the Presidential Candidates and their running mates in October, 2016.
