NPP Holds Extraordinary Conference Today

At least 6,500 members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are expected to gather at the Sunyani Coronation Park for the party’s end-of-year extraordinary conference.

The conference is to cap an event-filled year for the largest opposition party, having witnessed heightened internal wrangling resulting in deaths and suspensions.

The gathering in the Brong Ahafo Region is also to re-strategise ahead of the 2016 elections as the campaign team of the flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is expected to be unveiled.

Reports that the conference would nail the indefinite suspension of National Chairman Paul Afoko was clarified at an Accra High Court on Friday after the chairman attempted to slap an ex-parte injunction on any discussion on his position, which is now occupied by First National Vice Chairman Freddie Blay.

The conference will see in attendance Nana Addo and his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as well as Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who remains the only flagbearer of the party to have secured power.

The run-up to the conference has seen the Sunyani Traditional Council reject a request by the party to have its leader, Nana Addo, pay members a courtesy call. This stems from a criticism of the Sunyani Manhene Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri by regional executives of the party after he openly declared support for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
