Assembly Member And Unit Committee Must Cooperate For Local Development

Assembly members and Unit Committee members have been advised to cooperate at all times in order to execute community development plans and activities successfully.

Alhaji Sa Rhack Nartey, Ningo Prampram District Chef Executive (DCE), who gave the advice during the inauguration of Unit Committee members and Area Councils in the District, said the relationship between the assembly member and the unit committee members is very crucial for development.

“I implore you not to engage in unnecessary power tussles that will only lead to the dissipation of your energies and urgent work left undone.

“As a human institution, there is bound to be problems but if that should happen, it should be resolved at the Area Council or Assembly level,” he said.

He asked the Unit Committee members to be accountable to Assembly members as the Assembly members are accountable to the District Assembly.

“I wish to direct you all to read details of your various rules of engagement in Act 462 and model standing orders for unit committee members and area councils.”

He said Ghanaians have high expectations of their Unit Committee members and will want to see government at work at the local level through them.

“The task of government at the local and national level is to ensure that there is a quick and efficient resolution of the basic problems of the people,” the DCE said.

He said most people only experience government throughout their lives at the local level and it is important that their interaction with officialdom at the local level helps to deepen their faith in state institutions and government hence the need to be fair and courteous to the public.

The DCE asked the members to use the committee setting as a training ground for politics at the national level by reading, asking the relevant questions, and rendering service to the people.

The Unit Committee members and Area Council members were sworn into office by Mr John Acran, the local magistrate.
