The Convention People’s Party (CPP) opened nominations on Monday for the Party’s Presidential and parliamentary Primaries which has been slated for 2016.

The two week exercise is intended to give interested members the opportunity to contest the party’s primaries.

National Youth organizer of the party, Ernesto Yeboah, told Citi FM on Monday, it was a strategic decision by the party to open nominations at this time. 

“Presidential aspirants will pay five thousand cedis when they come to pick up forms. After that, they will be required to pay a filing fee of one hundred thousand Ghana cedis and an extra fifty-thousand cedis as development levy. For parliamentary, when you are picking the forms you will pay five hundred cedis and then pay two thousand cedis when you eventually file your nominations.”

Presidential aspirants for the two biggest political parties in the country namely the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party, paid GHc55,000 and GHc85,000 each respectively.

Ernesto Yeboah explained that the leadership of the CPP, decided to peg the amount up because they needed to gather all the resources needed for an effective campaign in 2016.

“We need to invest in our own party. No one can do that for us so we all have to help. That is why we are asking that these amounts  be paid”.

Meanwhile, some youth of the party, on Monday, picked  up forms for  their former  National Chairman, Samia Nkrumah to contest in the party’s presidential primary.

Others including the 2012 Presidential candidate, Dr Michael Abu Sakara Foster, Lawyer Bright Akwetey  are expected to pick up their nominations forms.
