Blame Govt For Any Astronomical Increase In Transport Fares And Not Drivers

A member of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) Communications Team, Charles Owusu, is asking Ghanaians to lay blame directly at the doorstep of the President John Dramani Mahama for the frequent increase in fuel prices including the current 27 to 28 percent hikes.

"Drivers have nothing else to do than to increase lorry fares when there is an upward adjustment of fuel prices since they cannot be expected to buy the commodity at higher prices and charge less for it…how then can they recoup their losses," he said.

In spite of the recent upward adjustment in prices of petroleum products by one of its biggest margins in recent times, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) directed commercial drivers to suspend increasing transport fares until stakeholders meet to agree on a new rate.

Though the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) announced that transport fares will be increased as a result of the 27% rise in fuel prices, following the passage of the Energy Sector Levy (ESL) by Parliament in December 2015, it (GPRTU) warned that it will sanction drivers who increase their fares without clearance from the Union.

But contributing to a panel discussion on PeaceFM’s Morning Show “Kokrokoo”, Wednesday, Charles Owusu indicated that life has become very hard for the ordinary Ghanaian, drivers not excluded, who sometimes fail to meet their sales target at the end of the day.

Thus he said, "the only advice i have for drivers in this country is to be very vigilant to vote for the right candidate they believe can make life comfortable for them come 7th November 2016."
