The Odorkor District Police have begun investigations into circumstances that compelled a 41-year-old mason to kill himself at Odorkor, a suburb of Accra.
The deceased, identified as Ishmael Ashong, was found hanging in their bedroom early yesterday morning after he had an argument with his wife the previous night.
Reports received indicated that Ishmael Ashong, who was in the room with his four other children that previous night, committed the act when they were all fast asleep.
His nine-year-old son discovered the body yesterday morning and called in some co-tenants in the house to assist.
The police were later invited to the scene to investigate the matter.
Reports received at the scene indicated that the deceased had an argument with his wife, Evelyn Amoah, Monday evening over housekeeping money.
The deceased then threatened to beat up the wife and so she immediately left the house.
Meanwhile, some tenants in the compound house apartment where the deceased lived confirmed to the paper that this was not the first time the deceased had attempted to take his life.
“He tried killing himself last year but he was found out and given severe beatings by the family,” one of them disclosed.
They claimed that the deceased, who was noted to be a drunk, often attacked his co-tenants at the least provocation.
Before committing suicide, one of the tenants said, Ishmael Ashong told them that he would leave them for a place where they would not find him again.
The tenants averred that they did not take the deceased seriously because Ashong was heavily drunk when he made that statement.
Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, Chief Superintendent Abraham Acquaye, the Odorkor District Police Commander, said the police, after visiting the scene, detained the wife for some time to assist them investigate the matter but she was later released.
“The wife is a nursing mother so she was released to report later to the police,” he said.
He added that police had begun investigations into the matter but were not suspecting any foul play.
The body has since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for autopsy.
