The Ministry of Transport will today, hold a meeting with transport operators to review transport fares upward following an increment in petroleum products.
A source at the ministry who confirmed the intended meeting to The Ghanaian Times in Accra, said the leadership of the various transport unions had been notified of the meeting.
According to the source, the meeting would enable both the ministry and the operators to agree on the margin of increment in transport fares, so as to avoid any haphazard increment by the various unions.
The source said the ministry was committed to the welfare of both passengers and the transport operators, and assured that the meeting would be held in a transparent manner in order to satisfy both sides.
Fuel prices went up between 18 and 28 per cent and took effect on New Year’s Day January 1, in accordance with the Energy Sector Levy introduced by government and passed by Parliament before it rose for the Christmas festivities.
The increment has led to calls by commercial drivers for an immediate upward review of transport fares to match the fuel price hikes, which they claim is having a toll on their income.
Fuel prices were set to go down by 10 per cent, if the levy had not been increased.
Per the regulations of the transport operators, any increment beyond 12 per cent warrants a corresponding transport fare increase.
