Fire Destroys Home Of Head Porters At Aboabo In Kumasi

The entire wooden structures covering the space of half of a football field sheltering hundreds of head porters [Kayayes] at Aboabo in Kumasi has been destroyed by a fire outbreak.

The fire said to have started around 8.30pm on Saturday destroyed personal belongings, mostly television sets, refrigerators, suitcases, furniture and savings of the porters.
When Graphic Online visited the scene Sunday morning some of the porters were seen wailing uncontrollably over their lost savings.

They watched helplessly as their property and savings went out in flames. Others managed to secure some items. There was no casualty and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Fire fighters from the Ghana National Fire Service who came around with three fire tenders could only prevent the fire from spreading to nearby concrete houses including a church.

The porters had recently relocated to the place which is nearby to Afful Nkwanta after the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly ejected them from their previous place for being too close to the Aboabo drain.
