Tarkwa Chiefs Protest Over Deplorable State Of Palace Road

The chiefs in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality in the Western Region are threatening to stage a demonstration against the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly over the poor road linking the palace of the paramount chief to the main Tarkwa township.

The road, which is about 10 kilometres from the main town, requires asphalting to connect the palace to the principal streets in the town.

Speaking in an interview, Nana Kwabena Gyan II, divisional chief of Mahamo, who appears to be leading the charge against the municipality, who currently doubles as President of the Western Region House of Chiefs, said the headquarters of the Wassa Fiase Traditional Council deserves respect, thus the road ought to be given the necessary attention.

He revealed that several appeals made to authorities of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly to get the road constructed have fallen on deaf ears.

"The authorities have ignored several appeals made for this important ceremonial road to be tarred. We are worried, and cannot continue to grumble, that is why we want to make our position known as traditional rulers for central government to understand our concern and intervene".

According to the chiefs, apart from the road being riddled with potholes, it is not motorable during the rainy season, bringing activities at the palace to a virtual standstill.

"The situation is so deplorable that it is difficult to welcome visitors to the palace," Nana Kwabena Gyan II underscored.

Apart from the expression of anger by the traditional rulers over the palace road, many people in the mining town have equally been concerned about the appalling state the main Tarkwa Hospital road has assumed.

Even though it has been awarded on contract, the 'killer road' which is a constant source of worry to expectant mothers and patients visiting the facility, has been abandoned by the contractor.
