Where Is Christian Councils Compassion For Ataa Ayi? - Chief Imam's Spokesperson Asks

Notorious armed robber, Aryee Aryeetey, aka Ataa Ayi who is serving 120 years in prison for various armed robbery offences can be set free – but that according to the Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, would be made possible if the Christian fraternity exhibit a little bit of compassion to the convict.

Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu on NEAT FM’s morning show Ghana Montie show maintained that, Ghanaian Christians are without compassion to mankind.

He expressed worry over why the Christian Council cannot launch a campaign to request from government to free the notorious changed armed robber who has accepted Christ and is said to be leading various religious fellowships in prison.

Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu’s comments was to buttress President Mahama’s appeal for compassion from Ghanaians [Mostly Christians] for the Guantanamo Bay detainees who will spend two years in Ghana.

Speaking on the issue for the first time, President Mahama asked Ghanaians outraged over his government’s decision to host the two, to show compassion for these men who have spent 14 years in jail without trial.

In the Bible, it teaches us to be compassionate,” President Mahama said when answering questions from the press at the Flagstaff House on Tuesday.

However, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu charged the Christian Council to help with the release of Ataa Ayi from prison – or accept him after serving his sentence.

I will tell the church, if it is true Ataa Ayi is a change person and now a church leader, I will encourage the church to integrate him because then he has shed off and left behind his private criminal life and has taken to Godly life.

…Human beings can reform and the churches know this. Why did Christ himself give compassion to people who are sinful and told them to go and sin no more? So if Ataa Ayi is truly converted and righteous, then Christians might integrate him. I don’t see why the Christian community should reject such as person,” he stressed.
