39 Babies Delivered On New Years Day

The delivery of a new born baby on New Year’s Day is significant for many people and lucky mothers who give birth on such occasions always swell with pride and gratitude to their maker.

And this year is no different as a total of 39 newborn babies, made up of 23 females and 16 males were recorded at Accra’s three major hospitals on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2016.

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the biggest referral facility, recorded the highest number of– 23 births, 13 of which were done through Caesarean section.

The 37 Military Hospital recorded 10 births with two CS deliveries.

Madam Mary Akoto, Senior Midwifery Officer at the Police Hospital in Accra told The Mirror that a total of six deliveries were recorded. These were made up of two males and four females with only one through Caesarean section.

Gladys Asantewaah, who had her baby girl at the 37 Military Hospital, couldn’t hide her joy when she interacted with The Mirror.

She believed a New Year meant fresh start and hoped her baby would bring her all the joy that always filled the air during New Year festivities.

Another mother, Hawa Habib, who delivered her baby at the Police Hospital, said there could not have been any better time to give birth than on a New Year’s Day.

“Even though I’m not a Christian, the New Year celebration has caught up with all of us and I feel proud to have delivered my son on this day. His birthday will always be remembered in a special way,” the highly elated mother said.
