The former General Secretary of the Christian Council, Rev Dr Fred Deegbe is asking government to be more open with Ghanaians on issues of national interest especially security matters.

His comments follow the recent debate on government’s decision to accept two former Guatanamo detainees believed to be terror suspects.

The two - Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby - have been in detention for 14 years at the Guantanamo Bay after being picked up in Afghanistan and suspected to have been linked to the terrorist group Al-Qaeda.

The move by government has generated mixed reaction with some criticising government for the action.

Speaking at an induction Service for newly elected executives of the Global Evangelical Church held in Ho, Rev. Deegbe said failure to engage the citizenry in dialogue over salient issues affecting national discourse will only increase the avenue for fear and panic.

“One of the challenges we have as a nation is that sometimes our leaders make decisions on our behalf…that is their role but when you are going to make a decision on something that has a very global implication, the minimum is to sensitize our people.

“There is a genuine uproar on what this is about and what is more puzzling is that if the country with the highest security will not take them, why would we take them and what is the reason,” he queried.
