JHS Two Student Dies From Attempted Abortion

A 16-year-old junior high school (JHS) student at Bogoso in the Prestea Huni/Valley District of the Western Region died when she took a concoction to abort a pregnancy.

The corpse has been deposited at the Tarkwa Government Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The two suspects, whose names are withheld, who allegedly gave the concoction to the deceased are in police custody assisting in investigations.

The Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Reuben Asiwoko, confirmed the tragic incident.

He said on December 31 last year, the deceased complained of abdominal pains and started vomiting so she was admitted at a clinic in Bogoso.

However, her condition worsened so she was referred to the Tarkwa Government Hospital on January 1, 2016, where it was diagnosed that she attempted abortion.

Supt. Asiwoko said the deceased’s condition was not improving so she was transferred to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

But before her transfer, the deceased mentioned her boyfriend and a female friend as those who gave her medicine to abort the pregnancy.

The police said on January 4, she died at the hospital on arrival and the body was returned to Tarkwa Government Hospital.

Mr Eric Nsaah, the father of the deceased, said: “In fact, this is a great loss and a sad moment for me because my daughter was very intelligent and I love her so much and I have even registered her to write the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination although she was in JHS two,” he said.

He promised to pursue legal action against the suspects to ensure justice for his daughter.
