Monsignor Anthony Kornu, Vicar General of the Ho Diocese of the Catholic Church on Sunday called on Ghanaians to “recreate their minds” to embrace refugees and migrants.
“Investment in migrants is most lucrative because it could be your turn tomorrow,” he stated.
Monsignor Kornu was speaking at a forum to mark World Day of Migrants and Refugees in Ho.
The celebration was under the auspices of the Ho Diocese of the Catholic Church with support from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
Monsignor Kornu said it was wrong to see refugees and migrants as “nuisance” because everybody is a migrant at a time.
He said the country’s attitude should be to receive them and show them love and respect.
Monsignor Kornu also urged refugees and migrants in the country to respect the rules and laws of the country and do things that could help lighten the burden of the country.
He asked Ghanaians to pray for peaceful elections in November to avoid becoming refugees anywhere.
Mr Emmanuel Danku, Head of Togolese Refugees in Volta Region, expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana, UNHCR and the Catholic Church for supporting them since 1993.
“We came to Ghana with nothing in 1993 but by the grace of God, we have life and more,” he stated.
Reverend Father Terence Adzimah, Head of Development Office, Ho Catholic Diocese and Volta Regional Coordinator, UNHCR, said his outfit was taking care of 2,959 refugees in the Volta Region.
He said the Development Office had trained 397 refugees as artisans and assisted many more to go into vegetable and crop farming, and animal rearing.
Rev. Fr. Adzimah said the Office had also registered all of the Togolese on the National Health Insurance Scheme.
