A Broadcast journalist in Takoradi, Paa Kwesi Simson, has appealed to President John Mahama to extend the kind gesture he showed to the heroic taxi driver in Accra to another one in Takoradi.
He said it was good the President rewarded Nana Yaw with a three-bedroom house for risking his life and using his taxi to knock down some armed robbers in Accra last week, resulting in their arrest.
But the Skyy FM presenter was quick to point out that a similar incident which occurred in Takoradi in November last year, in which another taxi driver risked his life to foil a robbery by a three-man gang, including a policeman, should not go unrewarded.
Narrating the facts of the case, Simpson said Enoch Kwame Amoah, 32, driver of taxi cab with registration number WR 577 Z, was sometime in November last year, around 1:30am, hired by a gun-wielding uniformed policeman, Osumanu Yahaya, of the Takoradi Central Police to convey some 'stolen' items from Tanokrom, a suburb of Takoradi, to the Central Police Station.
On their way to Tanokrom, the cop ordered the taxi driver to pick two civilians, who the police officer alleged were the thieves --- an order the driver complied with.
The driver was subsequently ordered to head towards a mechanical shop at Tanokrom, where the alleged thieves entered and packed four engine blocks into the waiting taxi.
From there, the cop asked the driver to take them to the police station, but halfway through the journey, the cop changed his mind and ordered the driver to divert to Kokompe, where the items were offloaded to a shop owner with whom the cop had arranged everything with on the phone for a fee of GH¢160.
After their successful operation, the cop then asked the driver to take them to the Effiakuma Police Barracks.
At this point, the taxi driver became suspicious of all that had transpired, and as he drove along, he fortunately run into some two immigration officials on duty so he cunningly asked permission from the cop to settle an amount he owed one of them.
When the driver alighted, he quickly alerted the immigration officials of what had happened, and with their assistance, they over-powered the gun-wielding policeman and the two civilians and sent them to a nearby police station, where they confessed to stealing, leading to the retrieval of the items.
The three were subsequently charged with the offence and the case is still pending in court
“I think this taxi driver too displayed patriotism and sheer bravery at the very peril of his life, and he should be given the appropriate recognition to serve as inspiration to others,” the Skyy FM journalist stressed.
