Prices Of Foodstuffs Shoot Up After Xmas

Prices of commodities have gone up after the Christmas festivity as a result of the increases in tariffs and rise in inflation.

At the Madina Market over the weekend, the Daily Heritage observed that prices have been increased and the explanation by the traders is that they need to make profit to sustain their business.

The price of 1kg (olanka) of palm nuts has increased from GH5.00 to GH6.00, gari GH5.00 to Gh6.00, pepper GH5.00 to GH7.00 and tomatoes GH30.00 to GH35.00.

Also, the price for cassava has increased from GH3.00 to GH5.00, plantain from GH1.00 to GH2.00, ripe plantain form GH2.00 to GH5.00.

The traders explanted to the paper that they are not to be blamed for the increment, but their suppliers because they hardly get the goods due to the dry season.

For cassava, the traders explained that the farmers complained that after harvesting they get a handful and the little they get is not in good shape.

Madam Adjoa Asah, a gari seller explained that during the festivity, their suppliers were not able to supply them because of shortage of cassava.

Madam Asah said “My colleagues and I had to travel from town to town in search for gari to buy because our suppliers disappointed us.”

For tomatoes, the traders said the market is always on and off because the vegetable is seasonal.

On her part, Maame Sika, a trader said “We are very hopeful that b the end of the month prices would be stable for us to reduce them for our consumers because tomatoes are perishable; if prices are high, the tomatoes will rot if they are not bought.”
