Some elderly market women in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, who joined organized labour to demonstrate on Wednesday, have descended heavily on President John Mahama and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration over the imposition of killer tariffs and taxes on the citizenry.
The aggressive women, who could not hide their misgivings against the government, stated that their husbands could not make love with them because their (husbands’) waists have become weak.
“President John Mahama, we are dying, our husbands can’t have sexual intercourse with us. They can’t buy the prepaid so that they can have light and have sex with us. We sleep just like that,” an aggressive woman screamed.
Scores of demonstrators who spoke to DAILY GUIDE, also expressed worry over the increases in utility tariffs and called on the government to rescind its decision.
Members of the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG), Polytechnic Teachers’ Association of Ghana (POTAG) as well as fetish priestesses who wore red shirts and held placards with several inscriptions, were assisted by the regional police brass band which was hired by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to ginger up the event.
The Regional Police commander, DCOP Angwubutoge Awuni, who deployed his men to guard the protestors, indicated that although the police identify with the concerns of workers, they could not join them on the streets to protest.
DCOP Awuni, before the protest march began, warned the demonstrators to make sure they abide by the law and desist from nefarious activities.
“I will urge you to impress upon your people to do what will not drag us into confrontation…I wouldn’t like our action to destroy the beauty of what you are doing…we are all workers, let me be very frank with you, if it goes well it goes well for me but I cannot go out there and demonstrate.”
The TUC Regional Secretary, Felix Agyemang, after the over three-hour protest march, led leaders of the demonstrators to the Regional Coordinating Council to present a petition, which was received by the Regional Coordinating Director, Rudolf Korzie Sambo, on behalf of the minister.
