Gun Runner Busted

A 49-year-old man, who allegedly deals in illegal importation and selling of guns, has been grabbed by the Madina Police In Accra. The suspected gun dealer, Andrew Brew Appiah a.k.a Ruby was arrested last Friday September 11, 2009 at East Legon with two weapons, ready for the market, whilst four extra posts, 24 pieces of cartridges, 529 millimeter ammunition and a registered pump action gun were also found in his room after a thorough search by the police. Briefing the Daily Guide, Chief Superintendent Paul K Ayitey, Madina Divisional Police Commander, said the police had a tip-off that Andrew Brew Appiah, an alleged secret arms dealer, had in his possession two guns ready for the market. The suspect was chased and apprehended by the police at East Legon, where the said pistols were found in his car. Upon further search in his house, we retrieved four other pistols, 24 pieces of cartridges including a pump action gun and a 529 millimeter ammunition, the commander said. Chief Superintendent Ayitey said on interrogation, Andrew Brew Appiah claimed that the weapons were for a friend who left the Netherlands a week ago. He said the suspect further named a certain John Bernasko as the one who deposited a bag containing the guns in his guest room without his knowledge, before leaving for the Netherlands. Brew Appiah however admitted that the two guns found in his possession at the time of his arrest were his, but claimed that he was taking them to the police headquarters for cleaning. Police however maintained their investigations showed that the suspect was an illegal ammunition dealer. I believe the arms were imported. These arms are not manufactured locally, as you can see, they came though our ports illegally, he reiterated. He therefore called on agencies at the countrys entry points to be vigilant in checking people who enter the country. Easy accessibility of ammunition by individuals can cause threat in the society, because this is what motivates the youth to go into armed robbery, he added.
