Ashaiman NDC Candidate Shelters Woman, 90 After Demolition

The NDC Parliamentary candidate-elect for Ashaiman, Ernest Norgbey, has donated assorted items worth almost one thousand Ghana cedis and an undisclosed amount to a 90-year- old woman whose house was affected by a demolishing exercise carried out by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly last month.

The 90-year- old woman and his husband had their house demolished by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly in an attempt to rid the Ashaiman irrigation Dam site off unauthorized buildings.

In his quest to address the accommodation challenge being faced by the 90-year- old Maame Kumasi, Mr. Norgbey, upon his visit announced that he had purchased a piece of land at Zenu, near Ashaiman, an Accra suburb, to enable him put up a room self-contain house for the woman.

He said the construction of the building which would soon commence is scheduled to be completed in three months from the day of start.

“I heard about the demolition exercise and I visited the site where I was touched by the plight of this old woman and her husband, so I decided to extend assistance to them by putting up a one bedroom self-contain apartment for them. I have however gone to the extent of purchasing the land already and the building will soon follow. As soon as the building starts I am hopeful of completing it in not more than three months. I campaigned on message of care and leadership so this gesture is a sign of the theme on which I campaigned” Mr. Norgbey noted.

Mr. Norgbey was in the company of the Ashaiman constituency chairman of the NDC.

The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly last month demolished some unauthorized structures along the Ashaiman Irrigation Site for citing them as illegal buildings. About 10 houses were pulled down which included that of the 90-year- old woman.

He added that he had directed his research officer to headcount the affected persons at the site to enable him extend some assistance to them.

Mr. Norgbey used the occasion to advise the people of Ashaiman to desist from building at unauthorized places since it was against the laws and such buildings would be pulled down should they be found culpable. He also called on land dealers, agents and chiefs to stop selling government lands to innocent persons.

For her part, the 90 -year-old, Maame Kumasi expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the NDC party and its candidate for the kind gesture.

“On behalf of my family I want to thank you and the NDC party for this gesture and I pray that the house as promised will be ready in three months as promised,” he said.

She disclosed that currently she is temporarily perching with a friend in an uncompleted wooden structure at Ashaiman.
