Kadjebi inaugurates town councils

Five town or area councils has been inaugurated in the Kadjebi District.

Mr Jacob Alebinde Asogonnde, the Kadjebi District Chief Executive, speaking at one of such programmes at Dodo-Amanfrom, appealed to the councilors to involve the electorate in the decision-making process saying participatory democracy occurs when people were involved in the decision-making process.

Mr Asogonnde said development is a shared responsibility, so all must be committed to the development agenda and poverty reduction strategy.

He said the process must be devoid of political, ethnic and religious inclinations to achieve the desired results.

Mr Asogonnde also called on the councilors to eschew divisive tendencies in order enhance the development of the communities in the District.

Mr Joseph Kwadwo Ofori, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akan Constituency, called on the district assembly and unit committee members to help mobilize enough internal generated revenue for developmental projects.

Mr Ofori said the councils formed the bedrock of the local government system, thus, they must be made functional to enhance grassroots democracy and good governance.

He said the councils and unit committees constitute important structures through which various communities have opportunities to relate to the assemblies.

Mr Ofori said the relationship between the assembly, the councils and unit committees should not be a master-servant one but rather they must assist and mutually benefit from each other.

Mr Daniel Agbesi Latsu, the Kadjebi District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), appealed to the district assembly and unit committee members to help educate the citizenry on their rights and civic duties.

He said the work of the district assemblies would be more appreciated if the assembly members and unit committees work closely, by providing the assembly with well-structured information that would help in facilitating development programmes.

Similar programmes were held at Kadjebi, Asato, Ahamansu and Dodi-Papase, all within the district.
