Traders Threaten To Relocate

Traders at the Shama Junction market in the Shama District have threatened to relocate to the roadside due to low patronage and frequent thefts at the market.

They said they have suffered a slump in business because commercial drivers have also refused to load and offload passengers at the designated portion of the market.

They told the Ghana News Agency that the non-availability of electricity coupled with the absence of security personnel in the night had also resulted in frequent thefts.

Maame Bensiwa, a trader, said commercial vehicles that were supposed to load at the market station now load passengers along the shoulders of the road and this prevents people from coming to the market.

Meanwhile, Mr Habib Mohammed, District Planning Officer, told the GNA that the Assembly has contracted a company to connect power to the facility and assured the traders that two security personnel would also be engaged to provide security at the market.

“The Assembly has planned to bring quarry chippings to cover the two entrances to the market because when it rains it is very difficult to enter the market”, he said.

He promised to ensure that commercial vehicles would be compelled to load and offload passengers at the market and that any driver who ignores the directive would be fined.
