Sachet Water Producers Just Package Tap Water GWCL

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Stanley Martey, has claimed that 90 per cent of sachet water producers in Ghana use tap water as their raw material.

According to him, the sachet water companies do not add any value to the tap water before packaging them and selling them to the public.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM on Thursday, Mr Martey said many of the sachet water companies only filter the tap water before packaging them.

He said even the filtration process was a “formality” because the tap water was clean.

In a rebuttal on the same medium, the President of the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers, Mr Magnus Nunoo, said sachet water companies treat tap water before packaging it.

He said although tap water is usually treated by the GWCL, it becomes contaminated when it passes through what he described as "dirty pipelines", which he said have not been cleaned for many years.

Mr Nunoo said sachet water producers take the tap water to the lab to first determine the contaminants in it, before they treat and package it.
